| Consider your child has wandered away from your campsite, a family member missing from a
care facility, or your spouse late in returning from a hunting trip. The stress, fear, and anxiety
of these situations are insurmountable. Highly trained Search and Rescue professionals are
often the only viable solution available to locate persons in these scenarios.
Search and Rescue is an area of operation we at K-9 Kampus take very seriously, having a
history of implementation of training standards and curriculum, the conduction of numerous
seminars and training evolutions, and the construction and implementation of many different
Search and Rescue Teams, and the founding members of the S.T.A.R.R. Academy (Search
Tactics and Rescue/Recovery).
As with all of the programs offered through K-9 Kampus, the search training is based upon
realistic scenarios and training evolutions. The curriculum is derived directly from a history of
both teaching and conducting searches in many different environments.
We understand there are currently a large number of many different Search and Rescue
organizations. Though most may be based upon good intentions, very few are experiencing a
high level of realism in training. Without this level of realism, the team can not competently
perform their duties in the field under the duress of an actual Search and Rescue event.
More yet are constructed as social events, an opportunity to socialize with others, as opposed
to training for the tasking which they have undertaken. By not training regularly and
realistically, these teams are failing in their responsibility to their community, and, ultimately,
that one particular person who becomes lost.
K-9 Kampus not only stresses the importance of this
realism in training, but implements it in each training
scenario. By doing so, we know that each
participating dog and handler team are becoming a
much more viable resource in the rescue operation
as a result of being able to complete their search
responsibilities in a timely, organized, and well
structured manner.
We conduct training programs in Tracking, Area Search, HRD (Human Remains Detection),
and Disaster Search. As with most of our programs, these can often be tailored to a specific
team's needs, environment, or geographic location. Though our concentration is primarily on
K-9, we conduct training in many additional areas we feel are necessary in order for a given
team to be able to competently conduct the search function.
These areas include: Scent and
Scent Theory, Topographical Map Reading, Compass, GPS, Conducting the Search and
Rescue Operation, Managing the Search and Rescue Operation, K9 maintenance training,
Man-Tracking, Lost Person Behavior, and Mounted Search. In many of these areas of
operation, certification is obtainable through S.T.A.R.R. Academy.
The options are numerous for providing you and/or your department with the Search and
Rescue Training you may need. You may wish to visit and train with us for a specific amount
of time, or you may wish for an on-site seminar concentrating on specific areas of Search and
Rescue, or you may wish to simply purchase the appropriate animal and attend the relevant,
necessary handler's course.
Either way, we welcome you to contact us directly to begin the implementation of realism into
your Search and Rescue training.
