“ Every animal is a magical, mystical, divine presence. Pets are animals willing to extend that presence to our daily lives.  If only for this, we owe them eternal respect and gratitude.  To teach children that pets need food, water, shelter and exercise.  To teach children that pets are dependent on people for their existence.  To teach children that pets need love.  To teach children the basic techniques in handling pets.”

Barbie was a special K-9, a Golden Retriever who lent herself specifically to the children of Henderson Middle School, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Barbie was placed within the school to assist in the day to day activities of many different classroom settings.  By having Barbie present, teachers were shown how otherwise reclusive students would readily open to learning and interaction alongside Barbie.

Essentially, Barbie was an integral part of the students’ day, and performed as tutor, assistant, confidant, and, most importantly, as their friend, offering the understanding and unconditional love that only such a dog can give.  Barbie served the students, faculty, and staff of Henderson Middle School until she was forced to retire,  and  has since passed beyond the rainbow.

She will be forever remembered for the education she shared and the lives she touched not only with students, but with us as well.
