Personal / Executive Protection Dogs – FAQ
Q: Will protection training make my dog “mean”?
A: No, personal protection training will not make your dog “mean”, specifically because of the balanced, realism-based curriculum we offer. For the qualifying candidate, this level of training actually creates a much more reliable and dependable animal. The dog learns when it is acceptable to apply aggressive and/or defensive postures and characteristics inherent to the dog.
Q: Can I send my dog to K-9 Kampus for protection training?
A: Yes, you can send your personal dog to us for this level of training. However, the dog must first pass the requisite criteria of age, character, and aptitude before actual training begins.
Q: What is the age requirement for my dog before protection training can begin?
A: The dog must be at least one (1) year of age before consideration for protection work. The reason for this age restriction is that it is essential that we engage this training with a dog who is exhibiting mental maturity approaching that of an adult. To place a dog younger than one year of age in a protection training curriculum would be equaled to requiring a child to learn, understand, and ultimately perform an adult’s job.
Q: Can’t I just buy a dog directly from a broker or vendor and save a lot of money?
A: Yes, and No. The initial expense may appear much less, however, this purchase is merely the beginning of the process. There are many surrounding issues one must consider, including; What is your relationship with the vendor? What are the options of returning the dog if he/she does not work out for you? What is your experience of dealing with issues of picking up this new dog at the airport? What is your understanding of the vendor’s training program in order to allow you to work the dog? What about further protection work, and the integration of this dog into your environment and lifestyle? What are viewed as initial savings are long lost in this overall process, and typically people who import their own dog end up spending well over the amount of money they needed to, and the dog may simply not ever “fit”.
Q: What are the benefits of purchasing a personal or executive protection dog through K-9 Kampus?
A: When a client purchases a dog through us, there are many benefits they receive. Included in the purchase price of the dog are; Having an established relationship with our supplying partners, we know the particular dog we are receiving, the dog’s personality and skill set, as well as the manner in which the dog has been conditioned up to this point. We take care of the shipping concerns, and we pick the dog up at the airport for you. When the dog arrives, we allow the dog to acclimate for a few days, then begin to develop a relationship with the dog, concentrating on further conditioning the dog for suitability to the particular client’s needs. We then finish the dog’s work, preparing the dog for the handler. When the dog is ready for placement, the client attends the relevant handler’s course. This handler’s course supplies the client with the knowledge, education, and skill set to competently and effectively handle the dog. In addition; the client has the life long opportunity of continuing to polish and improve the quality of work with their dog.
Q: What opportunities do I have for continued work and education after purchasing my personal protection dog through K-9 Kampus?
A: Our standard purchase agreement entails our commitment of continued education for both the client and the dog. This maps out the opportunities to improve the dog and handler’s abilities, while keeping the current skill set polished. We are proud to provide this service for our clientele at no additional charge.
Q: Which dog breeds are considered as the most applicable for personal or executive protection dogs?
A: Obviously, the German Shepard Dog is one of the most commonly placed animals for this type of work. However, we also place many Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Malinois, Giant Schnauzer, Bouvier, Airedale, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog, and even the occasional, Dogue Bordeaux, Presa Canario, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro. Our concern is much greater than placement of a particular breed, but rather which breed best suits the client’s lifestyle, travel habits, and specific requirements.
Q: What are my options for “specialty protective training”, such as the dog providing protection in a vehicle, on my boat, in my airplane, in my business, or while on travel?
A: These are aspects of personal protection we strive to address with each of our clients, specifically those charged with executive security details. Ensuring the dog can work in each environment which the client needs the dog to perform is paramount to the dog’s ultimate success. As a general rule, we do not charge an additional fee for most of this conditioning, as long as the conditioning is engaged during the initial phases of the dog’s training.
Q: What are my options for coupling other K9 services such as explosives detection with this personal protection dog?
A: This can typically be easily addressed, though this type of training will obviously entail additional fees. The most important consideration is to make these desires known at the time of purchase, in order that we can select the most competent candidate to perform the requested tasking.
